BLURRED LINES

Much missed inspiration decided to strike after a year long hiatus.
A casual conversation with a friend got both of us writing on similar lines. Here's my take.

BLURRED LINES

My God, that perfect, chiseled face
An angel under the moonshine
Breathless, speechless, I gaze at thee
Just then, your eyes meet mine
Sheer magic you and I could be,
Let's break these shackles, these fine lines,
For on tonight's surreal sky, my love,
Watch our broken stars align
As hand in hand, we walk; into
Our future of blurry lines
Knowing I'm yours, and you, mine.

A TAUNTING MEMORY

The most unexpected moments become your favourite memories.

Here's my small ode to the inspiration that revived my overflow of words, refined my thoughts and restored my sensibility.

A TAUNTING MEMORY

Caught clueless in a strange land
Wandering amidst unknown faces,
My mind froze, entranced
By the glimpse of a mystical stage
Of fine lines and curves.
As a hundred curtains of beauty rose
In unison, a silent exquisite symphony,
A drama unfolded in black and white
Masking the infinite depths of grey,
Followed by a rare streak
Of a gleaming shooting star.
For the moment to last, I waited in vain
But what remained was its memory
Too prominent for dismissal
Yet too distant from revelry.
Irrevocably I find myself
Trapped in this web of mirage,
And as I wake up to reality
With the inevitable revelation,
In silence, I shudder,
At the sheer impossibility
Of the thought of parting ways
With a farewell.

NEW YEAR, NAMMA STYLE!

Well, it’s the advent of a brand new year, a time when we let go off the past, renew our present, and start afresh for a better future. We all make our plans to have a great start to the year in our own special ways. But I find some things that are almost like a ritual for every New Year. Here’s my take on the inevitable aspects of an Indian New Year. You're welcome to help me expand my list!

1.  New Year Resolutions. This is probably the first thing people ask you after they wish you, and it becomes a necessity to find one, because otherwise, you’re perceived as a rebel! “Start going to a gym”, “Keeping my room clean”, ”Controlling my temper”, “Help mom and dad by being responsible”.. We've tried every variation of them every year, that beyond a point, we have exhausted all possibilities!
2.  Texting and social networks. No New Year or festival passes without a chain of forwarded text messages, especially nowadays, when all of us stay connected via whatsapp or facebook. Beautifully worded (but sometimes with poor grammar!) and aesthetically decorated with cute shapes and smileys, I sometimes wonder who comes up with these messages!
3.  Shopping spree. New Year is the time when most Indian households undergo a “makeover”! We Indians, with an inherent obsession for discounts and sales, find the end of the year the best possible time to engage in shopping. Guess we take the policy of “starting afresh” a little too literally! :P
4.  God bless us. “Indha varsham ellam nanna nadakkanum nu perumal a vendiko!” An oft heard advice from the elders in the family! Every New Year witnesses temples, churches and mosques transform into the likes of Tirupati, the Vatican and the Mecca, as hundreds of people flock them. We can spot even the least theist of people at a place of worship on the 1st of January. That, I’d say, is the power of tradition!
5.  Party hangouts. Tradition exists with an equally strong and contrast influence of modernity. Restaurants and beaches are thronged by swarms of youngsters, as midnight parties and hangouts with friends seem to be the new way of celebration.
6.  Food. How can an Indian celebration be complete if it doesn’t involve food!? A sumptuous elaborate meal, with an overdose of sweets, followed by a leisurely nap, has become an inevitable part of our New Year. Relax for this one day, for the routine is about to begin!
7.  TV. This is undeniably the factor that takes up most part of every January 1st. We eagerly and expectantly wait for our favourite movies to be screened as the announcer goes in his usual “Indiya tholaikaatchigalil mudhal murayaaga...” Why is this more special than the programmes telecast for other festivals? We’ve crooned songs and rooted for movies all through the year, but to have them all compiled as the best songs or scenes of the year is an excitement in its own sense.

The New Year gives us the reassurance that we haven't reached a dead end, the grit to move on, the hope of a new beginning and the excitement about what’s in store for us. We may be clichéd, dramatic, conservative or rational in welcoming it, but nevertheless, it is celebration time! :)

Wishing the world a wonderful, peaceful and fruitful 2014! :)

LAST.

“Neil Armstrong was the first human to step on the moon.”
“That child always stands first, be it in acads, dramatics or sports.”
“This was the first movie we ever watched together!”
“Why am I always the first one initiate the conversation?”

Life has a very prejudiced take on chronology. Well, you can’t blame life for it. It’s the people who make it seem that way! Whoever accomplishes something first is given the most importance. Whatever happens first in a series of events is glorified the most. First love, the first mobile phone, the first sleepover, the first rank, the first bench, the first step; what’s first is always given the highest priority.

What's last is lost.

It’s that time in my college life now, when the most celebrated firsts don’t exist anymore. It’s our final year of engineering and everyone is talking about lasts. The last chance, the last hangout, the last Orbitce (that’s our technical symposium, which was, by the way, a whopping success this year!), the last tour, the last picture, the last year together and the last what not! But, if we keenly observe, the happiness that exudes every time we reminisce about the firsts invariably goes missing when we talk about the lasts. To me, every last occurrence signifies the feeling of completion, the mark of a new beginning and a wonderful collection of cherished incidents. The last incident gives us a final chance to change for the better, to make amends and keep our smiles intact. Whatever happens last is what’ll stay in our mind for years to come, because there can’t be a future incident that’ll overwrite the last one!

With my ECE-B family, Orbitce2k13
Let’s forgive ourselves for the mistakes we've done before, let’s forget that we might never get such moments again and let’s live by the fact that these moments couldn't have ended in a better way! It’s time we let the lasts take the lead.

“It is such an amazing last year of college!”
“I’m glad we shared the last piece of that delicious plum cake!”
“Of course I remember. That was the last time we ever fought with each other.”
“I can't believe our last IV is over! It’s still so fresh in my memory.”

This post is in fond memory of all the lasts I've had in college; my last symposium, my last IV, my last best friend, my last year of under-graduation! :) Maybe a little too early to say this, but to ECE-B UNITED! \m/

The tour that made wow an understatement, at Wayanad
And, at last, let’s not ignore something just because it happens last..
For, what is last is bound to last forever!

Cheers! :)

SEARCH FOR SOLACE

It just wasn’t a good day for me.
I was on a lonely bus journey after a long exhausting day. I was upset, devastated by the day’s events, with no person to even share my feelings with. My forced silence only seemed to worsen things.

While my mind was already heavily messed up with anxiety, pressure and fear, a rude unexpected confrontation today only came as a stinging blow to my composure. All through the week, I’d obsessed over very many things, some trivial, some plainly insignificant and a few actually nerve wracking “problems”, all of them obviously breaking into pieces, my peace of mind! A person in turmoil constantly looks out for situations that affirm that state of mind. As a mere cumulative effect of these things, what must’ve been a casual incident turned into a hope-shattering experience (thankfully, just temporarily!).

I’m sure that many of you, like me, have fallen prey to the wrath of tension, depression and mood swings, at some point of time. They’re inescapable and seemingly monstrous. I had no idea then, that a cup of enticing hot tea, Ilayaraja’s soul-stirring symphonies and a scenic view all through ECR would change my perspective!

Not always can you find a friend to listen to you and lend a shoulder of support, more so if your problems are complex, and probably a tad bit uninteresting! :P In situations like this, no one can provide you solace better than yourself. Your basic senses do their best to help relieve your stress; a keen attention to them is all that is required.
Your happiness lies in your hands!
SEE- Observe the little pleasures of life around you- take a stroll, watch the kids in your neighbourhood play, they’re sure to bring a smile to your face!
LISTEN- Tune yourself to melodic sounds that soothe your mind- it could be the sound of nature, the banter of children, or some soulful music. Opting for melancholic opera or jarring rock numbers merely to assert your mental agitation is of no help at all!
TASTE- Your favourite food or drink can bring drastic changes in mood, but of course, you shouldn’t over-consume them!
A combination of all of these steps, I believe, will bring about a change in your mindset. If not help relieve you of your problems, they’ll definitely make you capable enough to tackle them!

Cheers! :)
